Q&A with Mrs Baulch: Championing the Arts at Northern Bay College

From the stage to the classroom, Mrs Baulch has spent nearly four decades inspiring young minds through the power of the arts. We caught up with this much-loved Northern Bay College educator to hear her story, her passion for performance, and why the Corio community holds such a special place in her heart.

Q: What is your current role at Northern Bay College?

Mrs Baulch: I lead the Arts Department for Prep to Year 8 and coordinate the IMPACT Arts program. I also run the extended school day program until 5pm for students in Years 3 to 10, where they can explore new skills and activities in a supportive environment.

Q: How long have you been teaching?

Mrs Baulch: I’ve been teaching for 37 years—29 of those in the Corio area.

Q: What inspired you to become a teacher?

Mrs Baulch: I love sharing knowledge and giving kids opportunities to achieve as much as they can. Teaching is about shared learning and giving back to the community.

Q: Do you have a favourite memory from your teaching career?

Mrs Baulch: There are so many things I have loved! But the moments that truly stand out are the “aha” moments—when something suddenly clicks for a student. Seeing that spark of understanding is incredibly rewarding.

I’ve also had the privilege of helping organise some amazing performances and events in our local and wider communities including:

  • Singing at Corio Village, Federation Square, and even at the top of the You Yangs
  • Annual Community Christmas Carols and Australian Citizenship Ceremonies
  • Filling Costa Hall with students from across Geelong for Music Count Us In—a powerful celebration of music in schools
  • Uniting all Northern Bay College campuses for a special event with Josh Pyke, making our school a national advocate for music education
  • Participating in the Victorian State School Spectacular, which showcases the incredible talent in our public schools

One of the most exciting milestones has been seeing my dream come true: the creation of a school theatre at Northern Bay College. It’s opened the door for our students to stage their own productions and experience the magic of performing arts firsthand.

Q: What do you love most about the Corio and Northern Bay community?

Mrs Baulch: The kids are so appreciative, and many families have become close friends. Everyone recognises the hard work that goes into what we do. It’s all about preparing students to be life-ready.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Mrs Baulch: I love spending time with my family and grandchildren, going for walks with my two border collies and staffy, and watching musicals—Come From Away and Six the Musical are my favourites.

Q: What’s your favourite food and drink?

Mrs Baulch: Chocolate. All chocolate! And I’m definitely a hot chocolate person over a coffee or tea.

Q: If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Mrs Baulch: Be true to yourself. Building relationships is the most important part of being a teacher. Always ask your students how they’re doing—and follow through.

Q: What’s coming up next for you and the school?

Mrs Baulch: We’re getting ready for the festive season with events like the Kmart Wishing Tree, performances at Federation Square, and our Community Christmas Carols. It’s such a special time of year!

As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day, we’re reminded of the incredible impact educators like Mrs Baulch have on our communities. Her unwavering dedication, creativity, and heart have shaped countless young lives and inspired generations of students to dream big and express themselves through the arts. Thank you, Mrs Baulch, and to all the teachers who go above and beyond every day—you truly make the world a better place, one lesson at a time.
